Welcome to the San Diego County Football Officials Association. We hope that this information will help you as you navigate your way through your first year as a football official.

Instructional Program

As you can see from the Meetings & Class Schedule, there are 10 Wednesday night classes and 2 Wednesday night field sessions. You are required to attend at least 8 but we STRONGLY suggest that you attend all 12. You are also required to attend 3 on-field clinics and you will work one scrimmage with a varsity crew.

You will be in a class with only other Probationary members and even though class begins at 7, the room should be open by 6:30. We suggest you come as early as possible and talk officiating with your classmates. Be prepared before you come to class. You will not learn the rules and mechanics by osmosis and you will need to spend a great deal of time studying outside of class.

Once the season begins, you are strongly encouraged to attend a varsity game each Friday night. You will receive an ID card which will entitle you to free admission to any game during the season and playoffs, except the finals.

Clinics

The weekend before Labor Day there will be 2 mandatory clinics, These will be intra-squad scrimmages at a local high school. The first one will be with the entire class and you will get a chance to work a few plays at each position. You will have time to observe the other class members work and ask questions of the instructors. The second clinic will be a split class so you will get more plays at each position.

On Friday of Labor Day weekend, you will work a varsity scrimmage with a varsity crew. This will be a scrimmage between 2 or 3 schools--the intensity rises. There will be no more than 2 or 3 probationary members along with the 5-man crew. These scrimmages usually go 80-120 plays.

On Saturday there will be a final clinic in combination with the Experienced class and Transfers.
