1. K, Free Kick, K-40. An untouched free kick is caught by a kicker at the K-47. There are no receivers anywhere near the spot of the catch. (6-1-6, 6-5-6)
Answer: D. Any of the above
2. During a legal punt, a kicker commits kick catch interference which causes the potential receiver to muff the kick. A receiver recovers the kick and time for the first quarter expires during the down. (3-3-3, 6-5-6 Pen, 3.3.3G)
Answer: B. The period will be extended for an untimed down only if team R chooses to have a yardage penalty enforced or chooses an awarded fair catch at the spot of the kicker’s interference
3. A kicker kicks off from the K-40. At the K-47, a kicker muffs the grounded ball. The ball continues to the R-40, where a receiver recovers the ball and carries it to the R-43, where he fumbles. The ball is recovered by a kicker at the R-48, where he is downed. (6-1-7)
4. K, 4/7, K-29. A scrimmage kick is touched by a kicker at the K-40. A receiver picks up the loose ball at the K-45 and returns it to the K-33, where he is downed. During the runback, a receiver blocks a kicker in the back at the K-43. ES is: (6-2-5; 10-4-4; 10-2-4b; 10-6)
5. K, Free kick, K-40. In an onside kick attempt, kicker kicks the ball directly into the ground. The ball immediately rebounds into the air. A receiver is in a position to grab the ball at the R-47, but a kicker steps in front of the receiver and recovers the ball. (6-1-6; 2-1-3, 2-4-1, 2-36-1)
Answer: C. Neither a nor b
6. K, 3/9, K-10. A kicker quick-kicks from the K-5. The kick is short and muffed by a receiver at the K-25. The ball rolls into kicker’s backfield. A kicker recovers it at the K-8 and runs to the K-15, where he is downed. (6-2-3;5-1-3f)
Was this an infraction because K2 made the kick instead of K1?
Context (part of rule or case): 6.1.3.A
Question: Put the ball in play at the inbounds spot 25 yards beyond the previous spot. Is this same as accepting a 5-yard penalty from the succeeding spot?
No they are two different enforcements.
Context (part of rule or case): A free kick shall not be kicked out of untouched inbounds by R. R has the
following choices.
A pop-up kick is different then a pooch kick correct? Are we talking about a kick straight up in the air?
Yes the pop kick is kicked into the ground first then pops up. The pooch kick is kicked directly into the air.
Context (part of rule or case): A pop-up kick is illegal.
A penalty on a Free Kick before the change of possession gets enforced on succeeding spot or try. Post change of possession penalties get enforced on the succeeding spot, the try, or the ensuing free kick?
See definition for PSK 2-16-2h. It only applies to scrimmage kicks.
Context (part of rule or case): PSK Enforcement
Just calling this out since this is different at other levels we might see on TV.
Context (part of rule or case): R cannot advance the ball on a failed try.
1) Throw a forward pass; or 2) Punt the ball again, when a scrimmage kick is in or behind the neutral zone (based on whether R has touched the ball beyond the neutral zone)...
Note the difference between a try and any other kick recovered behind the NZ.
If the kick does come back behind the neutral zone the kicking team can play the ball. Either run, pass or kick again.
Context (part of rule or case): Any K player may catch or recover a scrimmage kick while it is in or behind the neutral zone and advance, unless it is during a try
Question on mechanics. Do we do the first touching signal every time K is the first to touch even when the ball is rolling and K is just letting it roll as far as possible before they touch the ball to make it dead?
We only do the signal once when the plays ends.
K1 attempts to down a punt beyond the neutral zone, but his touching only slows it down. R2 recovers the bouncing ball and advances 25-yards but then fumbles. K2 recovers then is immediately tackled.
Question: Explain R can exercise his option, unless after R1 touches the ball. R commits a foul or the penalty is accepted for a foul committed during the down?
That is correct. At the end of the down. R can have the ball at the spot of first touching. Unless R commits a foul or there is an accepted foul. Then the first touching would be ignored.
Context (part of rule or case): First touching by K on scrimmage kick.
SITUATION A: Touching and recovering scrimmage kicks.
Please explain the last four boxes of this table: IF THE KICK BECOMES DEAD IN K's END ZONE
"Any new force by R" even if that new force is behind the line of scrimmage? What R never gains possession?
I thought it was illegal for a pop up onside kick (i.e., in the neutral zone)... immediately blow the play dead!
Pop up kicks are illegal and is a dead ball foul.
Context (part of rule or case): Pop up kick
Ball becomes dead once catch is made by R2 because of signal by R1. Any action after this happens is dead. Don't get distracted.
Context (part of rule or case): R1 signals, R2 catches and is tackled and fumbles
K must provide unobstructed path for R to catch kick. Unobstructed is a key term here.
Context (part of rule or case): Situation D - obstructed path
