Rule 8, Case 8

Quiz / Scenarios

On the last play of the 4th quarter, A scores a TD, making the score A34-B35. An offensive player throws the ball into the stands. B declines to enforce the penalty on the try, and A’s try is successful. The penalty is enforced on the first play of OT.

Answer: B

B12 enters the field to substitute for B15. B15 attempts to leave the field but hasn’t gotten across his sideline when A starts the play, and the flank throws a penalty. The play results in a TD for A. After the flank reports the foul to the referee, the referee immediately signals the penalty is declined and then signals a TD. Team A should have been given the opportunity to accept or decline the penalty.

One key element is on TDs we can only carryover to the "kickoff" so we can't carry over to an OT.

Foul on the TD play and foul on subsequent try can both be carried over to the kickoff since they happened on different plays they are treated as multiple fouls and can both be enforced.

Context (part of rule or case): Situation E: Foul on TD and try

Does the CIF playoff system use point differential? If so, then we must let the winning team attempt the "meaningless" try.

This would be something that will be determine at the start of the year.

8.3.3

Is this a point for A because the force that moved the ball into the EZ was made by B?

Additional Question: Why would this be a one-point safety instead of a 2pt safety if this happened on an "ordinary down" and not a try? Also, in an "ordinary down", why would A be rewarded with a safety if B recovered and advanced to the B10?

That would be correct.

Additional question: Because it is the rule.

Context (part of rule or case): Situation A: Force by B into EZ recovered by B on try = point for A

If K accepts the penalty. K retains possession. It will be first and goal from the R's 9-yard line. Question: Is this a spot foul assuming K is kicking from B's 25? Roughing the kicker/holder would be 15-yard penalty.

Roughing the kicker fouls are enforced from the previous spot in this case.

Context (part of rule or case): Situation: With fourth and 5 from B's 18 K1's field goal attempt is successful. B1
roughs the kicker/holder.

Assuming this case meant the muffed kick landed in K's end zone, it would be a safety. If the muffed scrimmage kick rolled into R's end zone it would be a touchback not a touchdown. The ball landing in R's end zone automatically becomes a Touchback since the muff by R does not denote possession and it is still a live kick - regardless if a player from K lands on the ball in the end zone following a muff from R.

Question: The ball is simultaneously recovered in the end zone by K2 and R1. R1 is awarded a touchdown. Is this because R blocked the kick? Not a safety. By rule the ball would belong to the receiving team.

(RULEBOOK 8.5.2.C) Since the penalty of an offensive Holding is assessed from the LOS, would a Holding that occurred in the end zone be a safety or would it be assessed like a normal holding penalty? (never mind the answer is in 10.4.4.e)

(RULEBOOK 8.5.2.a) if a B Player intercepts/recovers a ball inside the 5 and his original momentum takes him to the end zone where he is downed, the ball is downed at the spot where the possession changed, and it is not a safety. True. We need a bean bag at the spot of possession.

Context (part of rule or case): Situation B: With fourth and 3 from his own 10-yard line, the scrimmage kick by K1 is blocked so that it rebounds into K's end zone. (RULEBOOK 8.5.2.A) Momentum on change of possession (RULEBOOK 8.5.2.C) Offensive Holding in End zone

8.5.3

Since the force that put the ball in the EZ was from A, any action from B that puts the ball out of bounds is a touchback. We need to know the order of events and report it that way.

Context (part of rule or case): Situation C: Force that put ball in EZ was from A
